The neck finish is the upper part of the bottle or jar meant for attaching closures. This includes the threads, sealing surfaces and other dimensions needed to make the fit correct. It’s a critical feature, impacting seal performance, filling efficiency, and overall product integrity. Otherwise, it will be your true bottleneck indeed.
Most neck finishes belong to several major families. First, there is the Continuous Thread (CT), the type of screw-thread finish used in many products in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics industries. Then, there is the Twist-Off (TO) used with foods such as jams. It uses lugs and provides for vacuum packing of the products. There is even the PT family of finishes, allowing for quicker attaching. In beverages, especially carbonated drinks, the crown finish continues to hold sway while cork or stopper finishes continue to be used mostly for wines, spirits, and premium bottles.
In order to make sure that your bottles will work universally around the world, finishes need to be manufactured using certain standards, such as the Glass Packaging Institute(GPI), Deutsches Institut für Normung(DIN), and International Organization for Standardization(ISO). This way, the important parameters of a finish, like diameter, thread profile, etc., will be controlled, making it possible to combine products from different suppliers.
As history shows, neck finishes developed from cork-sealing holes into complex engineering standards due to automation and the needs of globalisation.
There are many criteria for selecting the proper neck finish: product type, fill method, closures, and consumer usage. It is important to make the right choice and avoid unnecessary problems.
At Glassworks International, we have a wealth of experience in delivering bottles that come with nearly every kind of neck finish on the market. Being a supplier rather than a manufacturer gives us greater freedom of choice in helping our clients select the right solution. Regardless of whether it is a standard or customised one, we will assist you in finding the most suitable option.
Proper education and expertise make it unnecessary for you to worry about neck finishes becoming a complicated and difficult task; indeed, there would be no reason at all for a problem to arise that might otherwise be considered as a potential “bottle neck.”
