The Numerous Benefits Of Cullet In Glass Containers

Blog written by Tania Angelova
Throughout my long career in the glass container industry, whilst processes and machinery have developed greatly, the fundamentals of glass composition remain.

Let’s once again see what the make-up of glass packaging is:

The raw materials for making modern glass are silica sand and soda ash (added to lower the temperature at which the mixture melts), limestone, and also magnesium oxide and aluminium oxide (to provide better chemical resistance).

Another major and highly important ingredient is Cullet. Cullet is recycled glass that helps reduce the amount of raw materials and energy needed to make new glass. A glass batch can consist of 25 to 60 percent cullet by volume.

Cullet is crushed glass, usually of the same composition as the mineral blend; and comes from reclaim from previous production runs and recycling sources. It is included because its characteristic of melting in the furnace before the other minerals helps speed up the reaction of the batch into molten glass.

Cullet is an important energy-saving ingredient that both reduces the amount of energy required for the melting process and in turn helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The resulting glass that is produced typically contains about 70 to 74 percent silica.

Every glass container can be processed into a new glass item, resulting in a closed-loop recycling plant.

Glass recycling maintains mineral wealth, reduces energy consumption and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which contributes to climate change mitigation.

Glass is fully recyclable and can be used over and over again as many times as needed. It is the only packaging product on the market that has an infinite recycling life.

This is why the first choice for packaging should always be glass. It is best for the brand and best for the planet!

At Glassworks International, sustainability is embedded within the supply chain. By sourcing glass containers from manufacturers who prioritise high cullet content and energy-efficient production, the company ensures customers receive packaging solutions that align with both performance and environmental goals; supporting a more circular future for glass.
