Sand is one of the most abundant materials on earth; But the glass container industry is highly selective about which sand it uses. The reason comes down to chemistry, and it matters more than most people outside the industry realise.
We are experts in glass packaging, supporting our customers with over 100 years of joint company experience, with a genuine focus on providing industry best standards of product and service.

Stuart Alexander heads up our technical and quality department, providing a wealth of glass production experience and expertise gained over many years. Stuart is always on hand to offer support and advice and to answer any questions you may have.
Commercial glass containers are primarily made from silica sand (SiO₂), which typically makes up 70–75% of a glass batch. But not all silica sand is equal. Glass-grade sand must contain greater than 99% SiO₂ and, critically; iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) levels below 0.020%. Even trace quantities of iron introduce colour into the melt, which is why the source and specification of sand directly determines the colour and clarity of the finished container.
The relationship between sand chemistry and glass colour is direct:
• Clear (flint) glass requires the highest purity sand available; ultra-low iron, often below 0.012% Fe₂O₃. Any contamination produces a visible green tinge.
• Amber glass uses iron and sulphur chemistry deliberately to create its characteristic UV-protective colour. Consistent iron levels in the sand are still essential for consistent colour batch to batch.
• Green glass tolerates slightly higher iron levels but still demands tightly specified, consistent raw material.
The vast majority of the world’s sand; Beach sand, desert sand, building sand, which is completely unsuitable for glass production. Beach sand is contaminated with salt, shell fragments, and organic material. Desert sands are too fine, too rounded, and often too chemically variable. Construction sand is graded for bonding with cement, not for melting into homogeneous glass. The UAE, one of the most sand-rich nations on earth, imports glass-grade silica from Australia and Belgium.
Selling sand in a desert may sound absurd, until you specify the sand.
