As businesses and consumers grow more environmentally conscious, the debate between glass and plastic packaging has never been more relevant. The facts are clear: glass is the more sustainable choice, yet government policies, particularly through Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes, continue to distort the conversation, making sustainability harder to achieve in practice.
The Problem: The True Environmental Cost of Plastic
Despite years of environmental campaigns, plastic waste remains a massive global issue. Unlike glass, which can be infinitely recycled without degrading in quality, plastic weakens with each cycle, ultimately becoming waste that ends up in landfills or polluting our oceans.
The carbon footprint of plastic production is another major concern. The factories we work with at Glassworks International produce glass with 450kg of CO₂ emissions per ton, while PET plastic emits between 2,000-3,500kg per ton – a staggering difference. Yet, despite this clear environmental disparity, plastic remains the dominant packaging material across industries.
Even more troubling is the fact that, while approximately 70% of glass in the UK is recycled, plastic recycling rates remain low and inefficient, leading to further environmental harm.
The Government’s Role: Policy vs. Reality
The UK government claims to be committed to sustainability, but its actions often tell a different story. The EPR scheme, designed to shift the responsibility of waste management onto producers, seems logical on the surface. However, the way it has been structured unfairly penalises glass, a truly sustainable material, while plastic producers benefit from loopholes and short-term incentives that fail to address the long-term damage.
Rather than rewarding materials that are truly circular, the government’s approach burdens businesses with increased costs, making it harder for them to choose the most sustainable packaging options. This inconsistent and flawed policy-making fuels a cycle of waste and pollution instead of supporting real change.
The Solution: A Collaborative Effort for Real Change
Sustainability is not just a business issue; it’s a societal responsibility. If we want to make a difference, we need:
At Glassworks International, we are committed to providing high-quality, sustainable glass packaging solutions that reduce environmental impact and support a circular economy. But real change requires all of us, businesses, consumers, and policymakers, to step up and demand better.
If sustainability is truly the goal, then it’s time for transparent policies, responsible business practices, and consumer action that ensure we’re not just talking about change, but making it happen.
Glassworks International takes pride in keeping up to date with the latest technologies and trends within glass manufacturing and production.
