How Glass is Made – And Why It Matters to Your Brand

By Stuart Alexander, Glassworks International

At Glassworks International, we believe that understanding the craft behind glassmaking helps us and our customers make better decisions. After all, packaging isn’t just a container; it’s the physical expression of your brand. And when that container is glass, it says something powerful: quality, sustainability and a commitment to doing things right.

If you’re searching for a reliable supplier of glass bottles and jars, it helps to know what goes into making the product that holds your product. So here’s a transparent look (pun intended) at how we manufacture our glass and why that matters to you.

It All Starts with Ingredients

Glass is made from naturally occurring, abundant raw materials. At the heart of our containers is soda-lime-silica glass, which includes:

Silica (Sand) – 71–75%

Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate) – 12–14%

Limestone (Calcium Carbonate) – 10–14%

These materials are carefully measured and mixed before being introduced into a furnace. At temperatures reaching 1,565°C, the raw ingredients are melted into a consistent, homogeneous molten glass.

From Molten to Mould

Once the molten glass is ready, it’s refined and cooled before being formed into ‘gobs’ – small blobs of molten glass cut to size. These gobs are then delivered into moulds using advanced forming machines that shape them into the bottles and jars our customers know and love.

Every container is formed under tight controls, monitored by automated systems that ensure precision, quality, and consistency. The glass forming stage is the heartbeat of our production, where tradition meets cutting-edge technology.

Quality You Can Count On

In your world, quality matters. Whether it’s the strength of the bottle or the smoothness of a jar’s finish, every container we produce is subject to 100% automated inspection. Our camera-based and contact sensors check every detail:

• Sidewalls

• Neck finishes

• Bases

If there’s a flaw, it’s caught and removed. That’s how we maintain the high standard we’re known for and why so many food and beverage producers trust us.

It Doesn’t Stop at the Factory

What good is a perfectly formed bottle if it doesn’t arrive in perfect condition? We know that producing glass bottles and jars isn’t just about supply, it’s about precision, performance and getting it right the first time. That’s why we provide comprehensive technical support throughout every stage of the process; from initial design concepts through to final manufacture.

Leading this is Stuart, our in-house technical expert, who brings over 47 years of experience in the glass manufacturing industry. Stuart works directly with our customers to ensure a smooth and seamless process, whether you’re developing a bespoke container or scaling a high-volume production run. Any technical issues are handled swiftly by Stuart and our wider team, so you can focus on growing your business with confidence.

With decades of experience handling fragile goods, we’ve developed robust packaging and palletising systems that protect your order from our site to your door. We also manage all logistics and import handling, so you don’t have to. Our products are stored in UK-based warehouses, ready for just-in-time delivery. That means no waiting, no uncertainty, just the right stock, exactly when you need it.
